Hindu Scriptures
The sacred writings of Hinduism, an oral tradition for many centuries before being written in Sanskrit, the classical language of India. The most sacred are the sruti, transmitted directly from God, which include the Vedas, the Upanishads, and the Brahmanas. The smriti, containing memories of God's words, include epic stories like the Mahabharata, the Bhagavad-Gita, and the Ramayana, as well as the laws of Manu (founder of the human race) and the Purana.
The sruti and the smriti help Hindus to understand the answers to questions of the purpose of life, the role of God and people, and also give answers to practical questions regarding personal conduct.
