Breaking down the construction of a sentence, in order to understand the relationship of its parts.

There are two main methods. Graphical analysis is used for simple sentences, demonstrating visually how the subject, predicate, and their qualifying adjectives, adverbs and clauses are related, using a form of ‘spider’ diagram. Tabular analysis is needed for complex sentences, and is in greater detail, with columns for identification of clause, link, kind, and function.

The link column lists words used to join the parts together. Links include conjunctions and relative pronouns.

The kind column identifies the type of each clause. Possibilities include main, adverbial, adjectival, and subordinate clauses.

The function column identifies the use of the clause relative to other parts of the sentence. Possibilities include independent (for a main clause) and qualification (shaping the meaning) of a verb or noun.
