EPOC

Operating system (OS) designed for use in electronic organizers such as the Psion Series 3 and Series 5 handheld computers, in mobile telephones, and in other wireless information devices. EPOC is licensed by Symbian, a company founded in 1998 by Psion and mobile telephony suppliers Nokia, Sony Ericsson, Matsushita (Panasonic), Motorola, and Siemens.

EPOC is a modular OS, allowing great flexibility for the designers of the devices that make use of the system. For example, it can be used in devices with a full keyboard, a combination of keys and a touch screen, a limited-range keypad (such as a mobile telephone), or those with no keyboard at all (like handheld computers similar to the popular Palm range). Because of this great flexibility, EPOC is used in many more devices than is first obvious.
