Sarod
Long-necked plucked lute used in North Indian (Hindustani) music. The body is hollow and pear-shaped and carved from a single piece of wood. The sarod has eight playing strings (four melody and four for drone and rhythmic punctuation) and about 15 sympathetic strings that run over a polished metal, fretless fingerboard. Some strings have a small metal resonator attached to the upper end of the neck. A popular solo concert instrument, it is usually accompanied by the tabla drum pair.
