Klinsmann, Jürgen


German footballer who was a member of the West German team that won the 1990 World Cup, and the captain of the German side that won the 1996 European Championships. An athletic centre forward, he made his international debut in 1987. In club football he played for Stuttgart Kickers, VfB Stuttgart, Inter Milan, Monaco, Tottenham Hotspur, Bayern Munich, and Sampdoria.

He was voted West German Footballer of the Year twice, and in the first of two spells in England with Tottenham, the English Football Writers' Association Player of the Year in 1995. In 1998, following Germany's 3–0 defeat by Croatia in the quarter-finals of the World Cup, he announced his retirement from international football. Klinsmann captained Germany in the tournament, scoring three goals.
