British Board Of Film Classification

Independent UK body established in 1912; until 1985 it was known as the British Board of Film Censors (see censorship). The BBFC ensures that a proper national standard is maintained in films available for viewing in the cinema and on videos and DVDs supplied to the public primarily for viewing at home. It is financed by fees charged for the examination of cinema films.

Films and videos intended for public viewing are submitted by the industry for examination. The board grants certificates in the following categories: U (Universal) suitable for all; Uc (Universal) particularly suitable for children (video only); PG (Parental Guidance) general viewing, but some scenes may be unsuitable for young children; 12A and 12 suitable only for persons of 12 years and over (film and video); 15 suitable only for persons of 15 years and over; 18 suitable only for persons of 18 years and over; R18 (Restricted) to be exhibited only in licensed sex shops (video) to persons of not less than 18 years of age.

The board may require cuts to be made before granting a certificate and may refuse a certificate altogether.
