British Film Institute
Organization founded in 1933 to promote the cinema as a ‘means of entertainment and instruction’. It includes the National Film Archive (founded in 1935) and the National Film Theatre (founded in 1951), and is involved in publishing books and periodicals such as the monthly Sight and Sound.
The BFI provides funding for film distribution and exhibition in Britain, and also releases films on its video label Connoisseur Video. It is responsible for programming and running the annual London Film Festival. A library of film books and journals, a stills and posters department, and research facilities are housed at the BFI's headquarters in London.
