Nijinksa, Bronislava
Russian choreographer and dancer. Nijinksa was the first major female choreographer to work in classical ballet, creating several dances for Diaghilev's Ballets Russes, including Les Noces (1923), a landmark in 20th-century modernist dance. She was the sister of Vaslav Nijinsky, continuing his revolutionary ideas of kinetic movement in dance. Other pieces include Les Biches (1924).
She joined the Ballets Russes as a dancer 1909, leaving when her brother was fired, to return as choreographer 1921. She staged the fairy dances in Max Reinhardt's film A Midsummer Night's Dream 1935.
