Other ozone depleters include halons, used in some fire extinguishers; methyl chloroform and carbon tetrachloride, both solvents; some CFC substitutes; and the pesticide methyl bromide.
CFCs accounted for approximately 75% of ozone depletion in 1995, whereas methyl chloroform (atmospheric concentrations of which had markedly decreased during 199094) accounted for an estimated 12.5%. The ozone depletion rate overall is now decreasing as international agreements to curb the use of ozone-depleting chemicals begin to take effect. In 1996 there was a decrease in ozone depleters in the lower atmosphere. This trend is expected to continue into the stratosphere over the next few years.
