DiMaggio, Joe (Joseph Paul)


US baseball player with the New York Yankees 1936–51, with whom he won the World Series ten times. In 1941 he set a record – yet to be surpassed – by getting hits in 56 consecutive games. He was an outstanding fielder, played centre field, hit 361 home runs, and had a career average of .325. DiMaggio was married to the actor Marilyn Monroe between January and October 1954. He was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1955.
