Equal Opportunities Commission


Commission established by the UK government in 1975 (1976 in Northern Ireland) to implement the Sex Discrimination Act 1975. Its aim is to prevent discrimination, particularly on sexual or marital grounds.

The US equivalent is the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) established by the Civil Rights Act of 1964. It investigates possible employment discrimination based on race, sex, age, religion, or national origin. The EEOC has the power to initiate law suits in the federal district courts.
