Jekyll, Gertrude
English landscape gardener and writer. She created over 300 gardens, many in collaboration with the architect Edwin Lutyens. In her books, she advocated colour design in garden planning and natural gardens of the cottage type, with plentiful herbaceous borders.
Originally a painter and embroiderer, she took up landscape design at the age of 48 when her eyesight deteriorated. Her home at Munstead Wood, Surrey, was designed for her by Lutyens.
