Wright, Joseph (artist)

English painter. He was known as Wright of Derby, from his birthplace. He painted portraits, landscapes, and groups performing scientific experiments. His work is often dramatically lit – by fire, candlelight, or even volcanic explosion.

Several of his subjects are highly original, for example The Experiment on a Bird in the Air Pump (1768; National Gallery, London). His portraits include the reclining figure of Sir Brooke Boothby (1781; Tate Gallery, London).
