Swindon


Town and administrative headquarters of Swindon unitary authority in southwest England, 124 km/77 mi west of London; population (2001) 155,400; it was part of the county of Wiltshire until 1997. The site of a major railway engineering works 1841–1986 on the Great Western Railway, the town has diversified since 1950 into such industries as heavy engineering, electronics, electrical manufacture, cars, and also insurance.

There is a railway museum, and the White Horse of Uffington, an ancient hill figure on the chalk downs, is nearby.
