History
Brisbane was founded as a penal colony (moved from its original site at Moreton Bay in 1825), and named after the Scottish astronomer Thomas Brisbane, governor of New South Wales 182125. The convict settlement was broken up in 1839, and free settlers were admitted from 1842. In 1859, when Queensland became a separate colony from New South Wales, Brisbane was chosen as the state capital. Brisbane city council, the first greater city council in Australia, was created in 1925, and the city of Brisbane is Australia's largest municipality.
