A British colony from 1650, Anguilla was long associated with St ChristopherNevis but revolted against alleged domination by the larger island and seceded in 1967. A small British force restored order in 1969, and Anguilla retained a special position at its own request; since 1980 it has been a separate dependency of the UK. From 1982, the government has consisted of the governor, executive council, and legislative house of assembly.
