The town occupies an isolated position in the middle of the Paglia Valley, on a plateau formed by an ancient plug of volcanic tufa. There is a Gothic cathedral (13th16th centuries); a palace (13th14th centuries) formerly used by the popes; and a 13th-century Palazzo del Popolo.
The flag is known as the ‘Lone Star’ banner. The red triangle symbolizes the blood shed in the fight for freedom from Spain. The blue stripes stand for Cuba's three provinces. Effective date: 20 May 1902.
