Mordvinia


Autonomous republic of central Russian Federation; area 26,200 sq km/10,100 sq mi; population (1990) 964,000 (60% Russian, 35% Mordvinians). The capital is Saransk. The republic is about 350 km/217 mi southeast of Moscow. The River Sura is in the east, and there are forests in the west. Industries include sugar beet, grains, hemp, and potatoes; sheep and dairy farming; commercial vehicles, timber, furniture, and textiles. Languages spoken are Russian and Mordvin.

History
Mordvinia was conquered by Russian princes during the 13th century. It was made an autonomous region in 1930, and an Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic in 1934. It remained an autonomous republic of Russia after the dissolution of the Soviet Union in 1991.
