Castilla-La Mancha

Autonomous community of central Spain; area 79,226 sq km/30,589 sq mi; population (2001 est) 1,755,100. It includes the provinces of Albacete, Ciudad Real, Cuenca, Guadalajara, and Toledo. Irrigated land produces mainly cereals, sunflowers, cotton, and vines, especially in the Valdepeñas region, and merino sheep are raised. The capital is Toledo. It was established as an autonomous region in 1982.

There is little industry outside of Ciudad Real, and the region lacks adequate energy resources, although a nuclear reactor was established at Zorita de los Canes. Migration from the region to Madrid and abroad by young people looking for work is common.
