Abuja


Capital of Nigeria (formally designated as such 1982, although not officially recognized until 1992); population of Federal Capital District (1991 est) 378,700; population of city alone (1991 est) 107,100. Shaped like a crescent, the city was designed by Japanese architect Kenzo Tange; building of the city began in 1976 as a replacement for Lagos, and is still largely under construction. The city obtains electricity from the Shiroro Dam on the River Niger; the main functions of the city are administrative, with only light industry.
