Smith was born in Hull, educated in London, and worked for many years in a publishing house. She published her first collection of poems, A Good Time Was Had by All, in 1937; Collected Poems was published in 1975.
Blue symbolizes hope, the clear sky, and the streams of the south. Yellow stands for the sun and the Sahara Desert. Red represents unity, prosperity, and national sacrifice. Effective date: 6 November 1959.
