Smith, Stevie (Florence Margaret)
English poet and novelist. She made her debut with Novel on Yellow Paper (1936). She wrote nine volumes of eccentrically direct verse illustrated with her equally eccentric line drawings, including Not Waving but Drowning (1957), and two more novels.
Smith was born in Hull, educated in London, and worked for many years in a publishing house. She published her first collection of poems, A Good Time Was Had by All, in 1937; Collected Poems was published in 1975.
