Lumbini


Birthplace of the Buddha, in the foothills of the Himalayas near the Nepalese–Indian frontier. It has become a place of Buddhist pilgrimage. The emperor Ashoka (262–239 BC) erected a pillar here in the Buddha's honour, and a sacred garden and shrine were established in 1970 by the Nepalese government.
