Leach, Bernard Howell
English potter. His simple designs of stoneware and raku ware, inspired by a period of study in Japan from 1909 to 1920, pioneered a revival of studio pottery in Britain. In 1920 he established the Leach Pottery, a communally-run workshop at St Ives, Cornwall, with the Japanese potter Shoji Hamada (1894–1978).
Having worked with trailed slip designs on raku ware in Japan, he also revived the 17th-century technique of moulding plates with slip decorations.
