Head honcho say's it's too early to judge the PS3, The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time voted world's best game and Fatal Inertia Xbox 360 screens
In an interview with US website Game Informer, Sony Worldwide Studios boss Phil Harrison has come out fighting to defend the critical comments regarding the PS3 from some corners of the games media.
"It's always dangerous to judge any system by its launch line-up," he stated. "You only have to go back to the games that launched with PSOne and PS2. If you took those few dozen titles and analysed them, you would never have imagined that either of those formats would have gone on to sell over 100 million units each."
Harrison continued: "We have a larger platform-dedicated development resource than all our competitors combined. So all of that goes towards the fact that the best games with the best technology are coming exclusively to Sony platforms."
For a major manufacturer to immediately go on such a defensive stance about such a new product has raised eyebrows with observers. Perhaps there has been growing disquiet amongst gamers regarding the lack of 'killer games' but Sony has promised an additional 130 games by year-end. Either way, it's apparent the veteran console manufacturer is clearly rattled. If we were betting boys we'd place a speculative wager on a price drop by Xmas.
Meanwhile, The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time - the classic Nintendo 64 title has been named the world's best videogame by influential multi-format videogame magazine, Edge. Compiled from thousands of votes from Edge readers, nominations were made for hundreds of games, spanning across the last three decades. The voting process also involved creatives working in the videogame industry, and countless rounds of deliberation among the Edge editorial staff. In second place is Resident Evil 4 and in third spot is Super Mario 64 - again for the N64. Shockingly there was no sign of a Pro Evolution title in the top 10 - philistines!
Finally we have a flurry of new Fatal Inertia shots. This good looking futuristic combat racer is destined for the PS3 and Xbox 360 in September courtesy of Japanese development house Koei.
