Appaloosa, the western directed, written and starring Ed Harris, expanded to 1,045 screens and saw a 3,321% upswing to move-up to fifth spot. Its $5m weekend boosted its three-week total to $5.6m. The religious-based drama Fireproof cooled 40% as it slipped to eighth with $4.1m for a two-week total of $12.5m. David Zucker, best known for Airplane and the Naked Gun movies, directed the right-wing political comedy An American Carol, which debuted in ninth place with $3.8m.
Director Larry David follows up the smash hit Borat: Cultural Learnings of America Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan with the religious documentary Religulous. Presented by political talk show host Bill Maher, Religulous debuted in tenth place with $3.5m from only 502 screens. Its per-screen average of $6,972 was second only to that of Beverly Hills Chihuahua with $9,020 at 3,215 sites. Overall the box office was up 44% on the corresponding period last year when The Game Plan held on to top spot for a second week with $16.6m.
