Roger from London says:
On important thing that you should do is ask the questions of your parents, aunts, uncles and grandparents whilst they are still alive its too late when they are gone. They can save you a great deal of time getting started.

A message to Kevin - you say you've got back to 1856 but now only have first names. You might be able to use 'FreeBMD' to get hold of some surnames by checking marriage records (for free!). Can you be a bit more specific about where you are and what you've got. Can't promise anything but might be able to help.

Hi Claire

Are you tracing him back or forwards?
Added: 21 June 2008 10:06
Claire says:
We have come to a standstill for over a year trying to trace my grandfather. His last address was in 1955 and, even though he was in the army, no-one has a following address for him. We don't know where to go from here, it doesn't help that we do not have a date of birth as well.

Any ideas???

Kevin says:
I've managed to go back to 1856, but I'm stuck as I don't have anymore surnames, just first names. Not sure where to go from here?
